Since the first years of his activity, Giampaolo Bisanti is invited constantly to conduct at the major opera houses and theatres in Italy and, at the same time, he had already the occasion to perform and collect successes abroad. Most recently he has been appointed General Music Director of the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari for seasons 2017-2020, leading each season two operatic productions and a great number of symphonic concerts.
Tell me, please, after 3 months of lockdown, when will your first performance take place and how do you feel about the moment when you will step again on the stage? What do you miss the most about it?
All artists live for music and staying away from it is something I have never experienced so far. Many contracts have been canceled until July, including my debut at the Sydney Opera House (Aida), my debut in Bilbao (Anna Bolena), Tosca at the Wiener Staatsoper, symphonic concerts at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, my debut at the Mupa Budapest along with the Staatskapelle Weimar and Aida at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
The very weird thing for me was turning my extremely intense life (trips, cities, operas and concerts) into an unexpected dead calm that was definitely shocking for all of us. Not only for us, insiders, but also for the audiences of all theatres and opera houses who were deprived-in a jiffy-of the joy of attending a show. A total stop of the whole musical world had never occurred in modern times, even during the Second World War. My first upcoming engagements are numerous this year: a revival of Aida at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in August/September and, from September on, the opening title of the Semperoper Dresden 2020/21 Season, Guillaume Tell by Rossini. My debut at the Chicago Lyric Opera with Tosca. I can’t wait to jump onto the podium again; actually, it is like feeling airless as all forms of art represent one of the deepest aspects of mankind.
I am sure that upon my first rehearsal the excitement will be uncontainable and I am also confident that each of us will start over again spending much more energy…a sort of new Renaissance!
If you hadn’t met music, what do you think you would have done in your career and why? When I was a very young boy, even before deciding to study music, I had many dreams. I dreamed of becoming a successful tennis player as well as a professional GP biker!
Unfortunately, I didn’t have skills for sports although I worked a lot at it… I was fond of basketball and tennis, but I had to give up… destiny decided differently! From the moment I fell in love with music, I threw myself into this wonderful world focusing my energy on developing my skills to make my dreams come true. I have to confess that an old passion is still burning inside of me (apparently everybody knows that!): the sound of motorbike engines is music to my ears and I could never imagine my life without riding a motorbike, despite the fact that my career doesn’t leave me a lot of free time.
